Chiropractic Adjustment

The chiropractic adjustment is the cornerstone of the chiropractic profession. Also referred to as chiropractic manipulation or spinal manipulation, the chiropractic adjustment is the main reason you go to a chiropractor. While we, and most chiropractors, offer complementary therapies, like electrical muscle stimulation, traction, hot and cold therapies, etc., it’s the adjustment that is the basis for treating patients.

What Exactly Is It?

Female chiro hands on man's backThe adjustment can be defined as a procedure in which trained specialists (Doctors of Chiropractic) use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint.

The word chiropractor is from the Greek, broken down as “chiro” (hand) and “practic” (practice), so a chiropractor is a physician who practices healing with their hands.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, “The purpose of spinal manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile-or restricted in their movement-as a result of a [soft] tissue injury.”

What Causes Injuries?

Sometimes the soft tissue injury is caused by one event, and if that’s the case, you probably know what happened. Did you lift something the wrong way? Were you recently involved in a car accident? Maybe you fell, or hurt yourself in yoga or CrossFit or at the trampoline park.

Often, however, the injuries causing your pain occurred over time. Maybe you sit at your desk in an awkward position for long periods of time. Perhaps you make repetitive motions, either at work or in your sport of choice (running, cycling, golfing, etc.) that have put stress on your muscles and joints.
